Vocal Coach, Singer-
Bass Player, Percussionist and Voice Over Artist.
Anton Browne has been teaching at The BRIT School since its opening in 1991 and served as Professor of Jazz Voice at Trinity College of Music (now Trinity Laban). He was also vocal coach on the first series of BBC Television’s The Voice, working directly with performers on tour. For singing tuition resources, visit TheSingThing.com.
Anton’s musical journey began with 70s rock, particularly Deep Purple, with guitar as his main instrument. Over time, his songwriting palette expanded to embrace funk, soul, and crossover artists such as Kool & The Gang, Bobby Caldwell, Steely Dan, and Michael Franks. The sophisticated collaborations of Al Jarreau and Jay Graydon deeply influenced him, and formal training in jazz voice introduced him to The Great American Songbook and its timeless repertoire.
His songwriting draws on a wide spectrum of influences, including Joni Mitchell, The Eagles, Caribbean styles like calypso and reggae, and Brazilian music, notably the work of Airto Moreira. Initially writing songs to perform himself, Anton taught himself keys, bass, and percussion, using drum machines for rhythm, and attracted interest from April Music Publishing.
Though live performance gradually took precedence—and original material was often sidelined in typical gig settings—years of playing and teaching gave Anton deep familiarity with a vast range of music, from jazz and soul to contemporary pop and rap. All of this now informs his songwriting, which he has returned to with renewed passion.
Today, Anton continues to write and record, playing most instruments on his demos. Modern recording technology and remote collaboration allow him to work with musicians worldwide, breaking free from earlier limitations and enabling more dynamic and expressive productions.
