What's Different About The Sing Thing?

The Sing Thing aims to impart the kind of skills best suited to the medium of recorded singing tuition. It offers gradual improvements that students are able to realise. It is simple yet serious – cheerfully presented.

Other singing practice recordings often have a classical bias complete with acoustic piano accompaniment. Whilst acknowledging the value of classical technique we can recognise that not all of it is appropriate to other styles. The Sing Thing is not biased to one style of singing; it offers a series of well-structured and progressive exercises with an instrumental backing to help make practising your singing technique a musical event.

The Sing Thing offers support on this website. This increases the functionality of the product enabling students to view articles about practising and singing practice in general. If a student has a specific problem or enquiry they can mail it to: info@thesingthing.com. A selection of these will be added to the FAQ (frequently asked questions) section of this site, benefiting others. In this way The Sing Thing is organic and continues to grow.

The Sing Thing 2 is for more experienced singers who already know their voices well, it features exercises for vocal accuracy and agility based around the Major, Chromatic, Whole Tone and Diminished scales. There are a couple of tricky exercises using Tritone intervals and alternate Major and Minor arpeggios. Purchasers of The Sing Thing 2 have the address of a hidden page where they can download additional material.

A bit about the author

Anton Browne - is a working singer in the soul/jazz/blues field completing over 180 pub, club and concert gigs in a year. The CDs are based on tried and tested singing exercises and approaches which he has found invaluable for keeping his and his students' voices in shape.

Anton set up the BTEC singing course at the music industry's BRIT School in '91 and he continues to work with the talented young singers that the school attracts. He also works with degree students at Goldsmiths College, University of London and is pleased to have acquired a Jazz Voice teaching post at Trinity College of Music. 2003 brought the launch of the ground-breaking Popular Music Vocals singing grades, Anton wrote the syllabus in conjunction with Tony Skinner for The London College of Music. 2004/5 sees Anton working with students at Roehampton University and singing with the Back to Basie Orchestra, festivals and concerts and vocalist for  Pete Long's outrageous Gillespiana a 20 piece be-bop orchestra. 2006/7 sees Anton writing the BTEC singing technique module for The Academy of Music and Sound and very busy singing with The Len Phillips Big Band

Having studied with various teachers for many years Anton knows what it is to be taught by the good, the bad and the indifferent. The Sing Thing applies the best of these approaches in a real and practical way.

Anton is aware that most of the aspiring singers he works with do not read music and are put off by its presence. The Sing Thing is expressly designed to work without any written music – without any written material at all.
